The Bellwood Police Department was established in 1900, the same year in which the village was incorporated. Over the years the department has progressed into a well-established, modern law enforcement agency.
The primary function of the Bellwood Police Department is enforce all federal, state and local ordinances; preserve life and property; deter crime; apprehend and prosecute offenders; and increase public awareness to enhance the quality of life in the village. The department’s mission is to promote, preserve and deliver a sense of security, safety and quality services to all members of the community and to those who pass within our borders.
The Bellwood Police Department is divided into four divisions:
Operations/Patrol Division - Responsible for daily patrol, routine, on view and emergency calls. Enforces all laws, makes arrests when necessary. Handles all traffic violations and accidents.
Investigative Division - Responsible for follow-up investigation on all assignments that may require in-depth investigation. Also follows up juvenile crime (as does juvenile officers).
Service Division - Responsible for assisting the police department in all areas of support and technology (e.g. vehicle maintenance, computers, dispatch 911, etc.). Responsible for all administrative services provided by the department.
Community Policing Division - Responsible for building relationships and partnerships between the community, civic organizations, village officials and police.
